On February 25, 2023, the 2023 Shanghai Elbow Joint Spring Forum was successfully held at Shanghai Shanghai Jiahui International Hospital. The forum was hosted by the Shanghai Medical Doctor Association's Orthopedic Physicians Branch and co-organized by the Shoulder and Elbow Working Group of the Orthopedic Physicians Branch, Fudan University-affiliated Huashan Hospital, and Shanghai Shanghai Jiahui International Hospital, with the LY Foundation as a co-sponsor.

Forum Overview

This year marks the 7th year since the inception of the Shanghai Elbow Joint Forum. The forum has always adhered to its belief and initial intention of delivering advanced concepts and techniques to every participant online and offline, making significant contributions to the development of elbow joint technology in China.

The forum has established long-term collaborative exchanges with Professor Shawn O'Driscoll and his team from the Mayo Clinic. Since the forum held in November 2022, they have conducted quarterly philanthropic discussions on elbow joint surgery. The previous forum focused on elbow joint instability, while this time, the discussion shifted to distal humeral fractures in elbow joint trauma.

Expert Speeches

Professor Xu Jianguang, President of the Shanghai Medical Doctor Association, delivered the opening speech for the conference. In bilingual Chinese and English, he extended a warm welcome to all the guests, both online and offline, from around the world. He expressed his sincere congratulations on the establishment of the Shoulder and Elbow Working Group of the Shanghai Medical Doctor Association's Orthopedic Physicians Branch and looked forward to their future work. He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the organizers of this forum, Shanghai Jiahui International Hospital, and the LY Foundation.

Academician Gu Yudong, Director of Hand Surgery at Fudan University-affiliated Huashan Hospital and Vice President of the Chinese Medical Association, sent a sincere, handwritten congratulatory message online. Vice Dean Ma Xin and Professor Jiang Jianyuan, President of the Orthopedic Physicians Branch of the Shanghai Medical Doctor Association, also delivered speeches, highly praising the interaction between the fields of orthopedics, hand surgery, and elbow joint surgery. They believed that this interdisciplinary collaboration would ultimately provide patients with more professional and comprehensive medical services, giving high praise to the work of the Shanghai Elbow Joint Forum.

Professor Wu Haishan, Chief Medical Officer of Shanghai Jiahui International Hospital, also delivered a speech at the forum. The Shoulder and Elbow Working Group of the Orthopedic Physicians Branch of the Shanghai Medical Doctor Association conducted a certificate awarding ceremony during the event.

Cutting-Edge Exchanges

Professor O'Driscoll from the Mayo Clinic shared his experiences and surgical techniques for managing complex distal humeral fractures, including highly refined principles of treatment and the management of common sequelae. His sharing was highly regarded by all attendees, and surgical videos and case studies garnered significant attention. Despite the late hour in the United States, Professor O'Driscoll remained highly focused and patient in discussing and exchanging ideas with scholars from China.

Similarly, Professor In-Ho Jeon from Korea Asan Medical Center shared his experiences with elbow joint replacement, particularly summarizing high-risk factors leading to the failure of elbow joint prosthesis surgery and experiences in avoiding failure.

In addition to the lectures by foreign experts, discussions and sharing by domestic experts were equally enthusiastic. Rui Yongjun, President of the Orthopedic Physicians Branch of the Wuxi Medical Association and Dean of the Ninth People's Hospital of Wuxi, set up a parallel session to engage in real-time communication with the main venue. Experts and scholars from authoritative medical institutions in China, including Dean Jiang Xieyuan and Professors Gong Maoqi and Lu Yi from Beijing Ji Shui Tan Hospital, Professor Fan Cunyi and his team from the Sixth People's Hospital of Shanghai, Professor Dong jingming from Tianjin Orthopedic Hospital, Professor Xiang ming from Sichuan Orthopedic Hospital, and Professor Li Dongsheng from Zhengzhou Orthopedic Hospital, all shared their respective concepts and techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of distal humeral fractures. This sparked lively discussions, and the atmosphere in the conference room remained heated throughout.

The enthusiastic atmosphere continued until evening, with offline participants deeply engaged and unwilling to conclude. Online platforms including J-Med official website, NEJM Medical Frontiers, J-Med, and Haoyishu Online Live Broadcasting Platform recorded a total of 24,014 viewers. Finally, the closing remarks by President Xu Jianguang, Professor Jiang Xieyuan from Bejing Ji Shui Tan Hospital, and Professor Fan Cunyi from the Sixth People's Hospital of Shanghai marked the conclusion of this forum.

We believe that through this Elbow Joint Forum, advanced techniques and valuable experiences in elbow joint diagnosis and treatment have once again been fully exchanged. This will undoubtedly contribute to the advancement of elbow joint diagnostic and treatment technologies to a higher level and a wider range in China.
