On July 15, meeting the expectations of numerous elbow joint enthusiasts from both domestic and international locations, the 2023 Shanghai Elbow Joint Summer Forum was successfully held at the Shanghai Jiahui International Hospital. This forum was academically supported by the Shoulder and Elbow Working Group of the Shanghai Medical Doctor Association and the Fudan University-affiliated Huashan Hospital. It was co-organized by the LY Foundation. The Shanghai Jiahui International Hospital was the host.
Forum Overview
This forum focused on the trends and advances in radial head fractures and replacement. It invited experts from outstanding teams both domestically and internationally, creating an academic feast that emphasized both theory and technique, as well as sharing perspectives and discussions.
Since the start of the Shanghai Elbow Joint Forum, it has consistently adhered to its belief and original intention of conveying advanced concepts and techniques to every participant online and offline. It has made many efforts and contributions to promote the development of elbow joint technology in China. A long-term cooperative relationship has been established with Professor Shawn O'Driscoll and his team from the Mayo Clinic in the United States. Starting from November 2022, quarterly themed discussions have been established.
In the spring forum held in March this year, discussions were centered around distal humeral fractures. This forum focused on radial head fractures and replacement. Each year, the forum progresses in a cycle, widely disseminating the basic concepts and cutting-edge developments in elbow joint surgery globally, promoting the development of the discipline, and cultivating and promoting new forces.
Expert Speeches
The Chairman of the conference, President Xu Jianguang, delivered the opening speech. President Xu welcomed all the domestic and foreign guests and attendees at the various venues in both Chinese and English. He expressed a warm welcome to the holding of this forum and sincere congratulations. He also expressed keen expectations for the young scholars who came to participate. President Xu extended heartfelt thanks to the organizers of this forum, Shanghai Jiahui International Hospital, and the LY Foundation.
Academician Gu Yudong, Director of the Department of Hand Surgery at Fudan University-affiliated Huashan Hospital, delivered a sincere congratulatory message online.
Frontline Exchanges
Professor O'Driscoll generously shared his knowledge and gave a special lecture on radial head prosthesis design and application techniques. He presented various surgical videos and cases, capturing the high attention of all participants. Despite the late hour in the United States, Professor O'Driscoll maintained a high level of focus and patiently discussed and exchanged ideas with Chinese scholars across the ocean.
Similarly, Professor In-Ho Jeon from Korea Asan Medical Center summarized the high-risk factors leading to the failure of radial head prosthesis surgery and the experience of revision surgery around the theme of elbow joint replacement.
In addition to the sharing by foreign experts, the sharing and discussions by domestic experts were equally enthusiastic. This conference had a total of eight venues, namely Fudan University-affiliated Huashan Hospital in Shanghai, Ji Shui tan Hospital in Beijing, Tianjin Hospital in Tianjin, Xi'an Honghui Hospital in Xi'an, Wuxi Ninth People's Hospital in Jiangsu, Hebei Third Hospital of Hebei Medical University in Hebei, Zhengzhou Orthopedic Hospital in Henan, and Sichuan Orthopedic Hospital in Sichuan.
Professor Dong Jingming's team from Tianjin Orthopedic Hospital, Professor Rui Yongjun's team from the Ninth People's Hospital in Wuxi, Professor Lu Jiuzhou's team from Fudan University-affiliated Huashan Hospital, and Professor Gong Maoqi's team from Beijing Sixth People's Hospital shared their insights and techniques regarding radial head fractures and replacement. The academic atmosphere at the venues was strong, and the exchanges were enthusiastic.
In the closing remarks by President Xu Jianguang and Professor Jiang Xieyuan of Beijing Ji Shui Tan Hospital, this forum came to a successful conclusion. Through this grand elbow joint event, new and old friends in the elbow joint field gathered at the forum. They joined in the grand event and discussed development together. Advanced technologies and valuable experiences in the diagnosis and treatment of elbow joint diseases, both domestically and internationally, were once again fully exchanged. It is believed that this will help China's elbow joint field advance to a higher level and broader scope, making a greater contribution to the improvement of elbow joint disease diagnosis and treatment!
